The bakery introduced 'bagged' bread and also a 'revolutionary starch-reduced 'Top Diet' loaf for the calorie conscious'.

By now, Associated British Foods had become the largest baker in the world, one of the largest millers in the world and one of the largest grocers in the U.K. ABF now employed over 75,000 men and women and, with some 12,700 vehicles, had the largest fleet in the world owned by a single group of food companies.
Twining group of companies was acquired, thus assuring the continuity of this valuable family brand.

The company acquired the Fine Fare group in the U.K. and a 51% interest in Premier Milling in South Africa.
