Group Overview Sugar & Agriculture
Sugar is the principle business in this segment along with successful agribusiness activities. Its combined sugar output makes it the second largest producer in the world.
Sugar – Europe
Sugar is produced from sugar beet in the UK and Poland.
British Sugar is the sole processor of the UK sugar beet crop - over 1 million tonnes of sugar is processed each year at its factories. The company is Europe's most efficient producer. Its sugar products are supplied to Silver Spoon for the retail market and to food & drink manufacturers in the UK and Europe.
Two beet sugar factories operate in Poland; Glinojeck, the country's largest has an annual capacity of over 100,000 tonnes.
Sugar - China
We have majority interests in four cane sugar factories in Guangxi Province and a new joint venture, called Bo Tian, operating four beet sugar operations in the north-east of the country. Continuous investment has raised annual sugar production to approximately 650,000 tonnes.
Sugar - Southern Africa
Illovo is Africa's biggest cane sugar producer with extensive agricultural and manufacturing operations in six African countries. Around 1.9 million tonnes of sugar is produced in South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, Swaziland, Tanzania and Mozambique. Its output is sold into the retail and commercial markets of Africa and exported worldwide. Operations in Zambia are expanding with a 50% increase in cane-growing area and a projected rise of 80% in sugar production.
Agriculture
Our agriculture business provides a full range of products, technologies and services for the food, drink and animal feed sectors including animal feeds.
Biofuels
The UK’s first bioethanol plant has started production at British Sugar’s Wissington factory in Norfolk. A full-scale bioethanol plant, using grain as a feedstock, is being built near Hull, as a joint venture between BP, DuPont and British Sugar.
