Allied Bakeries and Speedibake sit within ABF’s Grocery Group and form part of ABF Grain Products Limited and for the purposes of Gender Pay Gap Reporting, the results are reported as one entity.
Over the last year we have continued our journey to achieve our aim to create an environment where our workforce can bring their whole self and realise their potential without barriers. To achieve this aim, we have maintained a strong focus in four areas:
We launched Women in Leadership Level 5 Apprenticeship across the business which is an 18 month programme tailored to equip female colleagues with the skills, tools, and confidence to thrive in leadership roles. We have had two women complete the course successfully who have gone on to develop their career with us and have a further two women currently taking part.
Additionally, ABF has a Women in Leadership Forum with various networking and women centric activities designed to build skill levels, knowledge and networks to enable women to succeed. We are active participants and recently opened up the opportunity so all women across the business can now take part in this forum.
We have adapted our recruitment systems to facilitate blind recruitment whereby recruiting managers only get to see the applicant information that is relevant to the skills and knowledge required for the role. Recently launched, this new approach applies to every role, and we will be closely monitoring to see measure the benefits of this new approach.
To continue supporting an inclusive and respectful workplace, we have previously rolled out toolkits for Team Managers to explore with their teams, covering Allyship and Unconscious Bias; this year we have explored the subject of Banter in the Workplace - what it is, when it can cross the line, and how we can all contribute to a positive team culture. As part of our campaigns, we actively engage with our employees encouraging anyone who feels able to, to share their own story so that we can all learn and evolve.
We have once again run our employee survey open to all colleagues. Produced in multiple languages and using a dyslexia friendly font, we actively encouraged all our colleagues to let us know what they think. We are working through those results using various formats including listening groups and are pulling together clear action plans to meet the needs raised.
The gender pay gap is the difference between the average hourly pay of men and women. Various factors influence the gap such as the types of role women undertake and the demographics of the people in the company. This gender pay gap is different from equal pay, equal pay is where men and women are paid equal rates of pay for performing the same or similar roles.
Our population is made up as follows:
| Allied Bakeries | Speedibake | Total | % | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Men | 2,233 | 302 | 2,535 | 83.6 |
| Female | 449 | 68 | 517 | 16.4 |
| Total | 2,682 | 370 | 3,052 |
| Mean - The mean gender pay gap is the difference between the average pay of men and women in a company. |
|---|
| Median - The median pay gap is the difference between midpoints in the range of hourly pay for men and women, it takes each person’s pay, lines them up from lowest to highest, then compares the pay at the midpoint. |
|---|
| Mean Bonus Pay Gap | -55.6% | |
| Median Bonus Pay Gap | -848.1% | |
| % Employees Receiving a Bonus | Male 10.3% | Female 13.2% |
Overall a higher percentage of women received a bonus than men; our bonus number is made up of loyal service awards and recruitment bonuses as well as a company incentive plan. There is a higher number of men in the business who have received the loyal service or recruitment bonus which is of a lower value than the incentive plan and drives the median bonus pay gap which is not reflective of the ’real gap’. Removing these gives a mean bonus pay gap of -12%.
% of Employees in each pay quartile

| Upper Quartile | 80.4% | 19.6% |
| Upper Middle Quartile | 87.7% | 12.3% |
