Mauri ANZ’s new approximately AUS$230m flour mill in the city of Ballarat, Victoria, is one of the largest single investments anywhere by ABF over the last decade and a significant vote of confidence in the development and longterm future of Victoria’s agriculture and food industry.
The first flour was produced in August 2026 and the mill will be fully operational early in 2027. In line with increasing demand, it will enable flour production volumes to be more than doubled to 180,000 tonnes (up from 80,000 tonnes at our old mill) and the buying of Victorian grain to be increased from around 100,000 tonnes to an estimated 160,000 tonnes.
Replacing a 19th century mill in North Melbourne which has been part of our Australian business for generations, the Ballarat facility is a technological first for Australia and one of the most advanced mills in the world, engineered for safety, efficiency and product quality. It is highly automated, utilises the latest equipment and is targeting 40% less energy consumption per kilo of flour compared to the old mill.
The safety of Mauri employees has been prioritised, with improved traffic management, a more efficient layout, reduced manual handling and enhanced cleaning systems all expected to deliver improved safety outcomes.
Mauri’s move to the historic gold mining city of Ballarat has been carried out with the support of and in partnership with the Victorian Government, including rail connections, land and planning facilitation, and transition arrangements regarding the North Melbourne mill. A key element of this partnership is the AUS$55m Ballarat Intermodal Freight Hub, a major project which will enable more freight to be moved by rail and help reduce GHG emissions, while also creating local jobs and driving economic growth in the region.
The mill contains some of the most advanced flour processing technology in the world, including Bühler equipment and automation.
The Ballarat mill has been designed to meet increasing demand being driven by significant population growth in Melbourne, which is forecast to overtake Sydney in size by 2035. With ABF’s Australian business able to make more flour than ever before, we expect to supply over 50% of Victoria’s flour over the next half century and beyond.
